Professional Code for Fitness Trainers in Africa

To develop the African sports and health system, frame physical fitness training as a
prestigious internationally recognized profession, and ensure training quality and trainee
safety, the African Register of Fitness Trainers issues this code as a legal and ethical
framework regulating this vital profession.Chapter One: Basic Principles and
DefinitionsSection One: Basic Principles
Article 1: Core Obligations
Fitness trainers commit to:
Maintaining safety and health:
Prioritizing trainee safety and health, applying latest safety standards, providing a risk-free
environment, and responding immediately to emergencies.Professional competence:
Keeping scientific knowledge updated, applying recognized best practices, not exceeding
scope of expertise, and relying on scientific evidence.
Ethical values: Respecting trainees' dignity and privacy, ensuring equality and justice,
maintaining integrity and honesty, and complying with local and international
laws.Continuous development: Regularly updating information and skills, participating in
professional development programs, staying informed on recent research, and contributing
to field advancement.

Article 2: Key Terms
Fitness Trainer: A qualified, certified individual providing fitness and health training
services.Trainee: Any person receiving training services from a fitness trainer.
Certified: Holding official accreditation from the African Register.
Professional Service: Delivering training per standards and laws.
Competence Commitment: Responsibility to maintain high professional competence.
Chapter Two: Rights and Duties
Section One: Rights of Fitness Trainers
Article 3: Professional Rights
Certified fitness trainers have the right to:Free professional practice: Working in gyms, clubs,
centers; independent private training; specialized services per qualifications; responsible
advertising.Legal protection: Protection from discrimination/persecution, legal
advocacy/support, and defense against false claims; right to review/appeal.Fair financial
gains: Freely setting prices (without exploitation), fair compensation, benefits/insurance, no
arbitrary income limits.Support and resources: Access to training/scientific resources,
Register support for development, conference/seminar participation, specialization
opportunities.Recognition and appreciation: Official competence recognition, international
certification, certificates/honors, acknowledgment of achievements/contributions.
Article 4: Rights Against Discrimination
No discrimination against trainers based on: gender/sexual identity, religion/belief,
race/ethnic origin, age/health status, social/economic status, disability/physical
condition.
Section Two: Duties of Fitness Trainers
Article 5: Core Ethical Duties
Duties Toward Trainees
a) Care and Safety: Provide safe/effective training, conduct full pre-assessment, handle
injuries/emergencies immediately, document progress accurately, treat with respect/dignity.
b) Transparency and Honesty: Clearly explain services, avoid false/exaggerated promises,
state realistic goals/timelines, inform of risks, provide honest information/reports.
c) Confidentiality and Privacy: No disclosure of personal info, protect health data/test results,
respect privacy, comply with data protection laws, use data only for consented purposes.
d) Respect and Fair Treatment: Respect trainee decisions/choices, no pressure/coercion,
listen to concerns, provide inclusive environment without discrimination, respect
individual/cultural differences.
e) Autonomy and Collaboration: Respect trainee autonomy, collaborate on shared goals, seek
clear consent for changes, consult specialists when needed, honor final trainee
decisions.Professional and Scientific Duties
a) Scientific Competence: Apply correct scientific knowledge, use proven techniques, avoid
unproven methods, rely on trusted research/studies, refrain from advanced medical claims
(unless specially trained).
b) Scope Limits: No exceeding expertise, refer to medical specialists when needed, no
medical diagnosis, no prescribing drugs/treatments, acknowledge limits/constraints.
c) Continuous Development: Regularly update knowledge, participate in
development/training, read recent research/studies, learn from peers/experts, address
knowledge gaps.Administrative and Legal Duties
a) Registration and Certification: Maintain accurate/updated registration, renew certification
on time, pay required fees/subscriptions, comply with renewal requirements.
b) Insurance and Documentation: Obtain professional liability insurance, provide first
aid/CPR certificates, document trainee agreements, keep accurate/organized records, comply
with tax/labor laws.
c) Legal Compliance: Respect local/international laws, data protection laws, labor/social
security rights, health/safety standards, environmental/health regulations.General Ethical
Duties
a) No Exploitation: No misuse of professional influence, no pressuring for product purchases,
no exploiting vulnerable/economically weak, fair pricing without exploitation, no false
promises for payment.
b) Responsible Conduct: Abstain from alcohol/drugs during work, maintain
professional/decorous behavior always, no violent/abusive conduct, no mocking/ridiculing
trainees, uphold communication professionalism.
c) Environment and Sustainability: Maintain clean/safe environment, use resources
responsibly, promote healthy/sustainable lifestyle, environmental/social responsibility

Professional Standards.
Article 6: Assessment and Diagnosis Standards
Conduct full assessment before any program: complete medical/health history, physical
exam/basic measurements, appropriate fitness tests, movement/posture evaluation.
Document all results: keep accurate records, update regularly, protect from loss/disclosure.
Article 7: Program Design Standards
Every program must be: individualized to goals, safe/effective, scientifically based,
measurable/evaluable. Include: appropriate exercises/proper progression, rest/recovery
periods, regular variation/change, periodic re-assessment.
Article 8: Teaching and Supervision Standards
Trainer must: explain exercises clearly/practically, correct technical errors immediately,
provide positive/constructive motivation, adapt to individual needs. Communication must
be: clear/easy to understand, professional/positive, inclusive for all groups.
Article 9: Safety and Security Standards
Trainer must: check facility/equipment safety, know emergency handling, hold first aid
certificates, provide risk-free environment. In case of injury: immediate assessment, safe
immediate action, call emergencies if needed, document/follow up.Section Two: Ethical
Conduct Standards
Article 10: No Exploitation or Abuse
Prohibited for trainers: physical/psychological abuse, sexual harassment/exploitation,
pressuring trainees for private purposes, illegitimate financial gain. Prohibited forms:
discrimination by gender/religion/race, bullying/mocking, humiliation/degradation,
exclusion/unfair treatment.
Article 11: Confidentiality and Privacy
Trainer must: fully protect trainee info confidentiality, not disclose health data/results,
securely store records, comply with data protection laws. For photos/videos: obtain explicit
written consent, no use without permission, protect privacy, comply with image rights laws.
Article 12: Honesty and Financial Transparency
Trainer must: Set clear/transparent prices, no hidden fees, clearly explain services, honor
financial agreements. Prohibited: exaggerated promises, false medical claims, pressuring for
unnecessary products, prices based on exploitation.
Chapter Four: Compliance and Penalties
Section One: Ongoing Compliance Obligations
Article 13: Continuous Professional Development Every certified
Trainer must: complete at least 20 annual development points, update knowledge with
recent research, attend development/training courses, document all training activities.
Includes: specialized courses, seminars/workshops, advanced certifications, conference
participation.
Article 14: Financial and Administrative Obligations
Trainer must: pay annual certification fees, update personal/professional data, document
first aid/training certificates, comply with all renewal requirements.
Article 15: Legal Obligations
Trainer must: comply with local/international laws, pay required taxes/fees, obtain necessary
permits/licenses, maintain professional liability insurance.Section Two: Penalties and
Expulsion
Article 16: Penalty Types
Possible penalties for violators:Written Warning: For minor violations, with correction
opportunity, document violation/warning.Temporary Suspension: Defined period (3 months–
1 year), no practice during period, re-assessment before resumption.Final Certification
Revocation: For serious violations, ethics breaches, exploitation/abuse, repeated non-
compliance, trainee safety risks.
Article 17: Violations Warranting Severe Penalties
May lead to harshest penalties: abuse/exploitation, physical/psychological abuse, sexual
harassment, financial exploitation, serious ethical breaches, trainee safety negligence,
personal data disclosure, overt discrimination, legal violations, uncertified practice, false
medical claims, financial fraud.
Article 18: Complaint and Investigation Procedures
Receiving Complaints:
From trainees/others, confidential/documented, within 30 days of incident.Investigation:
Independent committee, hear both sides, gather evidence/testimonies, issue
report/recommendations.
Appeal and Review: Trainer right to review, appeal within 30 days,
independent higher committee review, transparency/justice in process.
Chapter Five: International Recognition and Cooperation
Section One: International Recognition Standards.
Article 19: International Agreements and Partnerships
The Register seeks: recognition from trusted international bodies, equivalence with regional
bodies, partnerships with international organizations, joining global professional federations.
Work on: REPS/EREPS/REPSSA equivalence, IFBB/NFPT/ISSA recognition, UNESCO standards
equivalence, WHO collaboration.
Article 20: Equivalence and Recognition Standards
Recognized international certifications: NFPT, ISSA, ACE, IFBB, FISAF, REPS (all branches),
EREPS, REPSSA. Equivalence for experience: practical experience as partial certification
substitute, recognized VAE, intensive training programs for leveling up.Chapter Six: Final
ProvisionsSection One: Application and Enforceability
Article 21: Law Enforceability
Effective from approval date, announced on official site/media, 90-day compliance period for
current members, full application to new members from date.
Article 22: Amendments and Developments
Amendable based on: scientific/technological advances, application experiences/needed
changes, member/community suggestions, international collaboration. Amendments must:
be pre-announced (30 days before application), in formal board meeting, announced to all,
transitional period if needed.
Article 23: Dispute Resolution Disputes resolved via:
Internal arbitration by independent committee, appeal to general board, external mediation
